Richest Man in Babylon - Kendal Chang

The Richest Man in Babylon is about the inner journey a man named Arkad goes on. He shares the lessons he learned along the way and how he made meaning from them. Arkad grows from ignorance to wisdom through experience and learning. He learns by failing, making mistakes, and then learning from those mistakes. We cannot be afraid to make mistakes and have some failures because it is how we grow. This book is not just about reaching a destination, but reaching a state of mind. True wealth is not measured by the amount of money someone has, but by the relationships they build. Just like Kiddo’s hike, Arkad’s personal journey was a physical journey and also a symbolic one. The inner transformation he went through is what truly made him rich. This made me think about how true purpose in life is not found in what we achieve, but in the lessons that we gain along the way. A key idea I realized from this book was that making meaning can be found through discipline and patience. Arkad’s path from poverty to wealth is a journey shaped by discipline and self-reflection. As I read this, I realized it was not about how much money Arkad had, but the process of becoming someone more disciplined and wiser. One of the teachings he gave was to “increase your ability to earn”. This reflects the idea that the journey toward becoming a wiser and better person is meaningful in itself. By improving skills and knowledge, we can create long-term meaning.
