Journeys in Nature - Paige Kelly

Many people feel peace when in nature and would associate it with adjectives, such as 'beautiful and calming', but why is that the case? Stephen and Rachel Kaplan do a great job of describing how nature and psychology are interconnected. They describe nature as a valued and appreciated part of life. They also believe that nature has a restorative nature to it, which is why it can be a great form of therapy for many individuals. They identified that this specific restorative nature is due to the Attention Restoration Theory, which specifically deals with handling immense mental fatigue that many individuals may have. This theory is split into four different sections: 'being away, extent, fascination, and compatibility. When all of these four properties are combined, an individual is able to find purpose and relief from their mental fatigue. The Kaplans describe how the environment that surrounds an individual is necessary and important in the entire restorative process, and for many people, they have found this restoration through nature.
