American Camino - Ryan Hinton
Now that the semester is over, I believe it's time to take a look at Dr. Redick's own book: American Camino. I think it is a very interesting book because it really matches the style of Dr. Redick's teaching when he is in class. I was curious when I first saw this book because I didn't really think that the Appalachian Trail could be related to spirituality in such a way. I have to admit this is because I thought we were examining religion related to the Appalachian Trail for the longest time, and I didn't really understand how walking the Appalachian Trail could be a religious activity. But luckily enough, Dr. Redick is hosting a domestic study away, where maybe I can look into that a little bit more. But back to the book at hand, I remember the first writing assignment that we had, where we were supposed to pull evidence from this book to support our point. I remember reading the section where Dr. Redick is in Maine and camps next to a lake and wakes up very early in the morning to look at the sun rising over the lake. He describes this moment beautifully, and I hope that as I continue to live my life, I take time to stay in the moment when I am presented with beauty. I try to combine this with my journaling, and I try to remember at least one moment each day where I stop and "smell the flowers." If I don't do this kind of reflecting on staying in the moment, life can get away from me very quickly.
