Achievement Society- Catlynh Phan
I read The Burnout Society by Dr. Byung-Chul Han recently for my research for the term paper and I was fascinated by his concept of the "achievement society." He discussed that modern society has shifted from one rooted in ideals and discipline to one rooted in production and not being.
We have developed this system of value where people are judged off their accomplishments and productivity rather than their character. We have reached an age that has practically become utilitarian. Value and meaning are often used synonymously and we make meaning of our lives based on how long our CV's are.
What happens when we abandon our morals and ethics for machine-like production? We are no longer human but a robots meant to fill certain roles made up to us by society. We become meaningless beyond our jobs.
